With the election less than two weeks away my main emotion around it is sad, more than anything else. I’ve been shocked by how many people have told me they’d prefer not to even vote. They will, of course, because it’s our duty…but I understand why they feel that way. Something just seems wrong about the whole damn thing.
I’ve heard smart people make the case for each of the candidates. I’m voting for Kamala, but I’ve seen too much and been through too much to be judging anyone for whatever choice they’re making. Each of us needs to vote our conscience, and for me my highest priority is blocking Trump from a second term. There are many reasons, of course, and what he has done to the Supreme Court alone is enough for me. The court is now a rogue court firmly in the hands of the most corporatist forces, and that was his doing.
The greater changes we need will not be effectuated by either party as they exist right now, however. We need to get through this election, and then the greater work will begin…
Today I did a Substack dialogue with fellow Substacker Matt Taibbi, centered mainly around the extraordinary article based on his talk at the Rescue the Republic Rally. I have profound admiration for Taibbi, and that writing to me is like our generation’s equivalent of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. There’s not one paragraph that doesn’t scream out the truth to me. I bet you’ll agree!
I think my conversation with Matt will be posted here tomorrow. Thanks to all of you who care. I’m very interested in your thoughts.
