My topic today is giantism.
A group led by Elon Musk offered $97.4 BILLION today to buy Open AI. Let that sink in for a moment, if you will. $97.4 BILLION.
To give you some perspective, a billion people on this planet live on less than a dollar a day.
Elon Musk already has access to US government computer systems - and the ones he doesn't have yet, he apparently will soon. As owner of X, he controls one of the largest communications platforms in the world. If he's able to buy Open AI, he would undoubtedly be the most powerful man on the planet.
We should think very deeply about what it would mean for any one human being to control so much, to so heavily influence so many people's lives. Our world is moving with hyper speed, and we're not in the cultural habit of thinking anywhere near deeply enough about what we're doing and where we're going.
That kind of carelessness and lack of forethought over the last fifty years greatly explains how we got to where we are. Right now, in this moment, let's not just go quickly.
