For the Democratic Party to rise from the ashes of our 2024 electoral defeats, we must take a sober, and quite sobering, look at how we got to where we are.
Many of the people at the Chorus Forum on Monday made mention of the fact that Democrats lost the last election because they lost an information war that has literally been in the making since Ronald Reagan was elected.
It's not just that the rich got richer. Its that they created an information/disinformation arena where they slowly bought most of the press, created policy writing agencies and lobbying groups, and here in the 21st Century took over vast online resources to push for extreme right wing agendas that will continue to confuse voters and concentrate their own wealth and power. It's no mistake that the owners of the largest social media on the planet will share the Capitol Steps with our nation's government on Monday at noon.
Elon Musk spent 250 MILLION DOLLARS to get Trump in office.
That should send a cold chill down anyone's spine.
Here is a link to a well researched article about the creation and effect of the media war that led to Donald Trump's re-election. It's not just the rich getting richer.
It's the rich buying the press and the schools, and warping the minds of the masses.
Ps. I honestly believe Marianne understands this. I heard her speak of it on the Chorus forum and I see evidence that she gets it in her proposal on this page.
The electoral college is the biggest obstacle. It favors the GOP, reduces interest in the masses, and discourages voters from participating in non-swing states.
How are unequal votes fair? One person should equal one vote. Furthermore, the electoral college was created during slavery, to count slaves as 3/4 a person, which is hardly fair then or now.
No. The same concept applies to the senate. 50 states each gets two votes regardless of size. Democracies don’t work. They always fail. We are a republic with democratically elected representatives.
The house is where populations are proportionately represented. Together it creates the right balance. Again the dems are losing because their ideas are trash especially to people who lack the resources to indulge in delusions of wokeness.
We will never end the electoral college because at least 40 states would leave the union.
I’m not debating this. What I said is not an opinion. It is a fact. The general population is less interested because their votes don’t count. If their votes counted, they would be interested in policy, people would be empowered to participate, their votes would impact policy and elections. Right now they are barely interested. Other countries prove that voting matters and people participate when their votes count.
And the ec is a product of slavery. It cannot be justified. It may never change, but it is the only system of its kind in the world, and as a result we have a population that isn’t as involved as they are elsewhere. Period.
Michael, fyi, the Iowa League of Women Voters have a very good presentation regarding the electoral voting system. Major points:
- The electoral college hurts our democracy because it decreases voter
turnout in “non-swing states.”
- The electoral college polarizes our country because it artificially divides us into so-called “red” and “blue” states.
- The electoral college turns the Presidential election into a contest
among a few “swing” states and ignores the rest of the nation.
- The electoral college unfairly weighs votes from some states over those from other states. The leader of our country should be elected based on one person, one vote.
- The electoral college was created because the Founding Fathers didn’t believe that voters could get information about candidates. This might have been true in1787, but it’s not true today.
- The electoral college is a shameful remnant of slavery, designed to give more power to slave states in the selection of President. It’s long past time for this vestige of slavery to be removed from the Constitution.
- The electoral college doesn’t serve the purpose intended by the
Founders. It was designed to be an independent body which could vote for any candidate. It has never worked that way, and no one wants it to.
- While some worry that large cities would dominate the popular vote, the 5 biggest metro areas make up only 18% of the population. It’s
mathematically impossible for a few large cities to choose the President.
- While some people worry that large states like California or New York
would dominate a popular vote, these two states make up only 16% of
registered voters. It’s mathematically impossible for a couple of large
Same. The DNC lost me after Obama’s first term. After the covid response catastrophe I feel like anyone still trying to “fix” them is hopelessly blind and delusional. I never thought I’d vote GOP. I thought the red wave was coming two years ago with the midterm elections. I’ve been waiting for this red wave since 2021.
You voted for Felon Trump? Couldn't you at least have sat it out rather than vote for Felon Trump? Marianne is the antithesis of Felon Trump. Why are you here? Looking for some logic, and can't find any.
Marianne, reading your piece made me even more pissed off at the Democrats than I was before. But despite the hellscape that's in everyone's face because of their failures, I'm glad they lost, or none of what you're talking about would even be possible.
I'm beginning to understand this. Tao Te Ching: "To reduce something, one must deliberately expand it; to weaken something, one must deliberately strengthen it; to eliminate something, one must let it flourish."
This is a much better role for you than President. You’d be a great head of the DNC. We need to do something different. As Robert Putnam would say, we need to move from an “I” focused society to one focused on “we”. This means engaging everyone and calling out divisiveness. You would be good at this Marianne.
Great plan! I especially like the everyday informative communications plan! It is definitely what we need and one of our worst shortcomings. Nobody knows what the hey is going on.
I am sooooo tired of hearing what Trump is doing or going to do.
What are WE doing? We need to hear this every day! What are WE going to do? That's what people want to know.
The Republicans have had a great masterplan, and have successfully rolled it out. What is our plan? I'm happy to hear that you have one!
I wonder if anyone made a list of all the loopholes Trump took advantage of during his first term. Granted, we are now way beyond that, but wouldn't it be a good idea to close them anyway, and try to close those that would allow future misuses and undermining of our constitution and institutions?
I don’t see this is fixing the Democratic Party. I see it as transforming it. It has transformed many times over the last hundred years and we are in a hell of a fix now. You are the leader for our time, Marianne. Very sound ideas and I know you have the motivation.
And to all the old school, Neanderthal, dinosaurs in the Democratic Party that want to keep things like they always have been, STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!
These changes may have been enough to gain enough votes to squeek by the last election but the fact remains that a large % of voters have different beliefs leading to different values. I do not think that Hitler's political opponents could have done much to prevent him from his election victory.
"The goal we all agree must be met: to win for Democrats." ???? Maybe first it’s to become Democrats. Or maybe the language could be different.
I don’t mean become Democrat vs. become Republican. I mean as something that engages people. I am a lifelong Democrat. I’ve never voted for a Republican. But that’s all. It’s not like I belong to a club or an organization. What do Democrats, whoever they are, do for me? I want Democrats in office because all officeholders run by a code and I like the Democratic Party’s code.
Something always is off, as if any of us cares about our political party except for delivering good candidates. Something else would need to happen to get the allegiance like sports teams have. Yeah Democrats? Why? Should we be featuring elected Democrats to cheer for, as what “Democrat” is about? Or what, to create real team spirit?
Marianne never gives up the fight for a better tomorrow!
Thanks for your comment.

There would not be a union of states if smaller states couldn’t get fair representation. The country exists because of the electoral college.
How about being relevant to people in middle America?
How are unequal votes fair? One person should equal one vote. Furthermore, the electoral college was created during slavery, to count slaves as 3/4 a person, which is hardly fair then or now.

I agree. Dems are losing because of bad ideas and an out of touch old leadership.

THIS IS FANTASTIC!!! If only everyone understood all of this! THANK YOU!
Marianne, this is the position for you! You are needed as the head of the DNC.
.
No more. Done with the genocidal DNC.

Unthinkable voting for the GOP. There are third parties. Vote, then get on with your activities.
Marianne is the only sane voice left in the dem party. How she is treated will show you the actual state of the party of chaos.
I know you could make real change. we are ready for it!!!

What can the average democrat (not technically part of DNC) do to help Marianne win chair?
How do we help communicate with DNC members our support for Marianne? I don’t understand how the voting works.
"The goal we all agree must be met: to win for Democrats." ???? Maybe first it’s to become Democrats. Or maybe the language could be different.

Thank you!! And, overturn Citizens United!! Corporations are NOT people, and money is NOT speech!!
