Hi, Everyone…

A couple of weeks ago I had a birthday!

Like everyone else, I take the physical realities of aging seriously. But other aspects of the process are at least as important. Emotional, psychological, and spiritual factors are as relevant as herbal and vitamin supplements, diet, and exercise. Brain and heart health are not just physical issues. The thoughts we think, and the love we show, affect the aging process too.

Healthy aging is not just about the quantity but also the quality of life. The question isn’t only how long do we have, but how happy and creative and powerful will we be? As we enter Chapter Three there’s a lot of ground shifting beneath us, particularly today. We need to navigate those changes in ways that lift us up and don’t just take us down.

I see a great untrodden field that lies in front of us as we age. It's like a vast frontier that is ours to do with as we choose, and that choice is critical. Yes, we can align with cultural attitudes that tend to make our powers deteriorate, forming an emotional undertow while we struggle to stay afloat. But we can also choose differently. We can take everything we have learned in the years that have gone before, processing and rethinking them to create our most beautiful chapter yet.

It’s true that certain things are no longer available to us as we age. But it’s also true that once we grieve what is no longer ours, we get to embrace some things that weren’t available to us until now. Looking at young women, I realize they have things I don’t have anymore. But it’s also true that I have things that they do not have yet. With age comes layers of understanding we might not have even known existed when we were young. We can take that understanding - the wisdom of our more mature years - and turn into an elixir of power. Doing so will bless not only our own lives but generations to come.

The body ages but the spirit does not. As we rethink the experience of age, we find we’re not just shutting down but in a way revving up. But in order to make that more than just words, we have work to do - primarily deep forgiveness of self and others. Taking responsibility for our past. Dropping our attachment to old stories. And willingness to live the lives we live now, taking all we have learned and applying them with intention and grace.

I want to help guide this process in others, as I seek to express it in my own life. For those of you who are interested, please join me for a 4-part series beginning August 5th. We will forge the creative process of becoming The Magnificent Crone.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “As I age, my beauty steals inward.” Age is loss but it is also gain. We have learned some lessons the world needs desperately right now. We can light a torch and carry it forward.

I hope to see you there.
