May this be our moment of awakening. “Our task is to generate a massive wave of energy, fueled and navigated by we the people, so powerful as to override all threats to our democracy.”
It helps me to see the end game of these policies ; The Shock Doctrine and Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein outline the process very well, IMO.
The idea is to create chaos (for regime changes) and the step in to "help" salvage the situation.
Do you need a loan? Have you instituted austerity measures? Will you employ U.S. services and corporations? And so on. This has been going on at least since 1953 in Iran, since 1973 in Chile, since 2014 in Ukraine, and it continues in Central and South America today.
The Trump moves are to destroy under the guise of "efficiency", inorder to pave the way for individuals with money to buy up whatever they want, i.e. privatize the commons, and let the rest of the safety nets die off. People suffer, oligarchs win.
I especially love this ... "Americans are often slow to awaken to a problem, but once we do, we can be a mighty force. And a mighty force is aroused right now ..." Spot on! As a lifelong environmentalist I've been tracking that aspect of the damage and it truly is a full-on assault on nature AND strong forces are standing up to it. My hope is that this ugliness leads to consciousness shift. Thanks for your great work, MW!
Maybe this is happening to force us off the either/or stance to begin working together for the common good for all. We humans seem to have to be forced to bring out the best in ourselves in time of crisis instead of choosing to live that way without crisis. Natural disasters bring our Humanity out - Humanity being Human + Divinity = Humanity - and now we are in a human disaster and our best selves needs to rise to the surface and we need to work together to take back our country.
I am not sure that what is happening to me is for my own good, and I don’t feel that my justifiable anger is unhealthy, as it is part of the grieving process, but my hostility is real. From a metaphysical standpoint it occurred to me that the hostility is being released along with the cancer.
I see that as a flushing out of energy that doesn't serve you and how it could be happening FOR you and not TO you. I'm not saying you have to agree with me - I'm only saying this is the lens I am looking through for my life.
I don't know if you are speaking about your experience physically or emotionally or both. Something I've done that has helped me tremendously is to set up acupuncture appointments the same day as my treatments. I was sick for two weeks after my first chemo treatment and have done acupuncture with each one after that and I've had NO side affects at all - other than losing my hair and my appetite. Maybe that would help?
I don’t know my battle with cancer hasn’t brought the best in me. Quite the opposite in fact. I like to believe in these things in principle, but not so sure about them in practice.
I understand what you're saying, however, I guess I would say my experience with a cancer diagnosis has brought out the best in me and I able to see through this lens even more clearly because I'm able to look at how thing happen FOR me instead of happen TO me.
“From lack of access to healthcare; to withdrawal of health and safety regulations in food, workplaces and environment; to the end of scientific and medical research that has taken years to foster and has been a prized jewel of our country; to lack of support for the poor and hungry even here in the United States; to empty shelves at grocery stores combined with increased inflation; to the nullification of the powers of both Congress and the judiciary; to the undermining of Social Security; to proposed budget cuts to Medicaid; to removing Constitutionally established civil rights protections for everyone in this country. Already considered a flawed democracy, we’re now mimicking established autocracies in a way that will cause untold damage to ourselves, our freedom, and the world itself for years to come” … I think that about sums it up … Well Done !!!!
Thank you Marianne. This is indeed a moment of reckoning for our country and citizens, and I am fully ready to work to take back our democracy. Thank you for reminding us of this need every day!
This Administration is trying to turn the U.S. into a White Christian Nationalist country. I never seen so many of the women in his circle wearing oversized crosses on the outside of their tops for all to see. One of their ominous messages to their Followers. What a mess!
Real Christians are known by their fruits, by the good their labor produces, and they do it for the least amongst us, and not as some are doing for the absolute wealthiest amongst us.
IF the self-proclaimed Christian nationalists were true Christians at heart they wouldn't be so upset about the choice by the conclave of our new pope, who has love for all humanity. The good and the bad of it is their actions reveal their true ill intentions, so we can spot them a mile away and armor up.
"TYRANNY IS A REAL THING / It's coming at us. We must not bend."
-- Exactly! Except... it's already been here for quite a while now... "It’s been coming at us, openly, for twenty-four years. We must no longer bend." FIFY!
"We must not bend" --
-- Not as we did in early 2020, when even after the initial shock, ALL discourse was suppressed in service of a "public health" "emergency", in which legislatures *for years* ceded their authority to publicly debate and decide among options, handing it over instead to secretive and dictatorial executive branch agencies and global "authorities".
-- Not as we've done now for two and a half decades since 9/11, with AUMF ceded by the Congress to the executive to allow it to conduct secret wars, to surveil its own citizens, to imprison them, to assassinate, all without public knowledge and recourse. The Bush-Cheney middle-east bulldozing monsters, anyone? Barack "I'm Good at Killing US Citizens" Obama, anyone? "We tortured some folks!" Oh really? Well, tell us, who are they? When's the perp walk?
-- Not as legacy journalism has been doing through all this time, through both Democratic and Republican administrations and Congressional majorities to ignore and suppress information and popular will whenever it interferes with power. Joe "Sharp as a Tack" Biden and Kamala "Modern-Equivalent-of-Smoke-Filled-Rooms-Nominee" Harris, anyone? ...
"Legacy journalists, independent media, and citizen content creators are covering this disaster daily."
-- Except for 2009-2017, and 2021-2025. Where were they, on sabbatical? Making toasts to the other award-winning BoBos in our modern Courts of Versailles? They've allowed the psychopathic geniuses over fifty years time to strangle us on medicine, on housing, on education, and now they're coming for our food. If that doesn't make you pause and wonder if your favorite village idiot isn't really quite capable of destroying the world single-handedly, then you'll absolutely *love* what's in store through bipartisan AI!
"There are voices on both sides of the political spectrum decrying the threat of dictatorship coming from the White House"
-- What do you suppose is going on here? Think hard!
"The Trump administration is an authoritarian regime, trampling over the rights of whomever doesn’t align with their view of how America should operate."
-- Gimme a break -- they're ALL "authoritarian regimes" -- even when it's an "inconvenient truth" for us to swallow, and they're madly scrambling to keep it under wraps, and to simulate a passable Potemkin democracy! But sure, stay on the take, and/or keep your job-role safe, and/or continue in denial.
Remember, for every one like me foolish enough to say these things, there are easily ten others thinking it...
Mary, I think, perhaps, we need to be saying the crooks "must be held accountable" under our laws, if we still consider them enforceable! No guts, no glory.
OK. That's reasonable. What does it actually consist of? Let's say President John Doe, or Attorney General Jane Doe, was well aware that Mr Un-named had ordered the death of a whistleblower, and the whistleblower actually did die. [I am not thinking of a particular case; there are many.]
What can be done? And if we know of such things and nothing did get done, what should we do?
Prompted by a reference to 'White Christian Nationalists' by Sonja Anderson in the comments section, I'll add two quick thoughts to this discussion. First up, thanks Marianne... your recent YT discussion with Rev. Brandan Robertson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsq1r4YoyDk first put this crowd on my radar screen. Finally, and more to the point and as an antidote to Trump's tyranny... may I suggest some people here might take comfort in hearing David Brooks' comments tonight on the election of Pope Leo XIV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqjZnOHhEu0 . Being an old hippie at heart the phrases, 'the Universe works in mysterious ways' and 'the cosmic irony of this happening' spring to mind. How many White Christian Nationalist Catholics are now likely to have a 'come to Jesus moment' before the mid terms?
Tyranny is a real thing, for sure! And my experience is that the energy spent on the awakening and sobering of the populous has been successful, which was both bittersweet, but necessary, as has been the accomplishing of an almost-complete understanding of the short-sighted, self-serving, if not truly ill-intended actions coming out of the WH and it's cabinet right now.
As I see it at this time, while each of us decides on which area of attacks on our freedoms we want to focus our efforts on, it is also time to acknowledge that, as Christians, if Christians, that we must live in our full strength and believe with "expectant fervor" that, GOD HAS A PLAN, plans to prosper us and give us a future. All we are to do is move forward to that end, IN ANTICIPATION, with as much CONFIDENCE, and even yes, JOY, as we can humanly muster.
This is not to say sit back and relax. On the contrary, it's to say set about our efforts on any given day empowered by the thought that we are not alone in this. That we are riding on the wings of God's love and He and His goodness are going to prevail, through us.
Being human, we fell asleep, took our eyes off of the ball so now we've been shaken awake so we can save what we've known to be called democracy, but make it yet better with our renewed energy and focus, especially around the shortfalls of it that have become glaringly evident in recent days. I can't think of anything or anyone that could have united this divided and despondent nation than what is coming out of the WH right now, other than the last attack on our democracy on 9/11.
Let's use this time as a changing catalyst to let our minds and hearts dream the wildest dream for our nation, and shoot for the stars, working toward that end, knowing that even if we fall short we're still making our way to that more perfect union where all are welcome.

Amen to that!!!
The phrase "We must not bend" does not do it for me.
The wrongdoers do not get punished. That is the issue. They must be punished.
It is perfectly natural for a society to punish wrongdoers.
A king of England got beheaded by members of Parliament, if I remember correctly.
Of course it is natural to let the rich and famous get away with anything and everything.
I suppose that's our instinctive reaction to those above us in the hierarchy.
And we let the aggressive get away with whatever, as we don't relish a kick in the teeth.
Still, the phrase "We must not bend" does not make sense to me.
"We must punish" makes sense.
