HATRED ITSELF IS THE OPPONENT

Tragedy at San Diego's Islamic Center

I reflected this morning, as I’m sure many have, on the hideous events at the Islamic Center in San Diego yesterday. What is the fundamental problem? What are its causes What do all who hate have in common? And what part of ourselves might unconsciously conspire with the hatred in our world today? Where is our own bigotry, or racism, that we haven’t been willing to face?

Only the deepest kind of self-awareness can lead to genuine societal awareness. It’s easy to blame others, while not so easy at times to look deeply at ourselves.

Each of us can help purify the collective energy that has become so saturated with hatred in America. In A Course in Miracles, it says, “God does not give you victory in battle. He lifts you above the battlefied.” Our own thoughts, our own words - including the willingness to challenge words of hatred wherever we see them - are as important as our own behavior in lifting us to a higher place.
