A few days after Charlie Kirk’s murder, I saw in my mind a vision of lots of planes lined up on a runway. One after another, they were ready to take off. You could just feel it in the air, how ready Team Trump was to exploit this tragedy for their totalitarian purposes.
First it was calling transgender Americans “nihilistic violent extremists” and pressuring ABC to drop Jimmy Kimmel. Now the President is saying his plans to militarize cities is like preparing for “a war,” and Pete Hegseth has announced that the press can only cover Pentagon activities with pre-authorized reports.
So much for free speech. So much for freedom of the press. So much for a free people.
The good news? These outrages are awakening a giant on both sides of the political spectrum. The American people have only just begun to show who we are.
