According to MSNBC, Elon Musk says the Department of Education no longer exists.
Before he or one of his computer team pushed the delete button, I wonder if Elon bothered to find out what the Department of Education actually does. What was its function and how did it operate? Was this a decision made after deep reflection among key players, talking to people in the department, learning from educational professionals around the country how the Department of Education affects the lives of our children?
Or - did he and his merry band of hackers just turn on a site, look at a few pages and say “Nah, let’s kill it”?
Let me guess. It’s an easy bet.
Elon Musk is a giddy kind of guy, we know that. But to be giddy about gutting the U.S. government…. trashing the federal workforce … throwing the lives of millions of civil servants and some of the most vulnerable people in the world into chaos… not stopping to consider the effects of his actions on the lives of real people…
If you felt you had to do all those things, wouldn’t you at least be sorry?
Of course he’s not sorry. He’s enjoying this. And that says a lot. This is not a man any of us should want making such major decisions. He has proved himself to be profoundly careless with other people’s lives. And the suffering he’s caused already has only just begun.
A lesson I learned the hard way - I think a lot of people have - is that if you know a person will mess with someone else, it’s very naive to think they wouldn’t mess with you. “Oh but he would never do that to me!” is a belief that has turned a lot of people into fools.
Do you ever wonder if Trump asks Elon for the hard drive?
Trump knows nothing about computers. He doesn’t even use one. And he’s given the power of Computer God to Musk. Meanwhile, Trump is someone who has the one single thing that Elon can’t buy for himself. You tell me that’s not worthy of Act 1 in a Shakespearean drama. Trump should probably remember that there are a lot of ways to buy someone.
Meanwhile, it clearly serves Trump for Elon to be so busy taking over the government, giving Donald lots of time for golfing, signing executive orders making the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, directing the Treasury Dept. to no longer mint pennies, dreaming up real estate deals for Gaza, and going to the Super Bowl. My my, what a bromance. Can’t help but make you think they’re perfect for each other…
Just not for us. At least not for me. For those who think this is all just wonderful, I’m happy we still have the freedom in this country that we can agree to disagree. At this stage of the game, I’m grateful that we can.

My father was a public administrator in Mississippi and retired with 37 years of service. He missed one day of work and had 2 years of sick leave when he retired as an elementary school principal. My father’s heart was in it for every student, teacher and as he would say the problematic parents. Even then they had to ration how many copies teachers could make for lessons to maintain a budget. This is horrifically sad. But I recall when I asked you a question you looked me straight in the eye and I said, “what do we do now?” Your response was right on point. We start from where we can and that’s what we have to do now. And this is just when the DNC was ripping away my democracy by not allowing all of America to choose who we would’ve liked to have as a candidate to run against this false prophet.
Thank you for these posts Marianne. I always feel like someone is keeping watch (not just me!!!l) I know there are many of us who look on in astonishment (being kind!). But thank you great perspective always ☺️
