With the latest batch of Epstein files released, Todd Blanche at the Department of Justice has told us not to expect any more criminal charges. In other words, we should just move on now.
The narrative seems to be this: Nothing more to see there. Simply normalize evil and go on with your life. In the words of the President, “It was all a hoax.”
But there is plenty to see in the newest batch of Epstein files, and it’s rotten to the core. None of us should “just move on.” Silence is a form of passive complicity. For the sake of our own souls, we should refuse to just move on.
It’s too obvious to talk about how America protects powerful men, but have I mentioned recently how America protects powerful men? Even when they’re caught and have to face justice, it’s extraordinary how many of them Trump has pardoned. At this point, such corruption seems almost like small potatoes. What Nixon did, what got him impeached, would look like no big deal today. Who would there be to stop him?
And that’s the point. That’s their strategy. Do corrupt things so often that people become too exhausted to care, and there’s no one left in government to hold anyone accountable. Again, as in so many things, it’s up to us now - to We the People - to refuse to look away. To refuse to give in to compassion fatigue, or outrage fatigue, or whatever name we give to tricks of the mind that might lead us to give up, give in, and give away our democracy.
Just don’t do it. Bear witness. Yell “Foul.” And don’t let the bastards get you down.
